Dryer Vent FAQ
How does a dryer work?

A clean system works on the air exchange principle. Ambient air is taken into the dryer, heated, blown over your clothes, and then removed via the vent system. Warm air passing over wet clothes naturally produces moisture. The main purpose of a vent system is to remove the hot air and moisture. If, at any point, the vent system becomes restricted or clogged, many issues can occur. The most common are below.

Why does my vent need cleaning?

Most consumers are under the impression that the lint trap/screen removes all the lint. This is not so. A lint screen is designed to trap 70-90% of all the lint cycling through the system. The other 10-30% is removed via the vent system. Although it may seem fine and minuscule, lint buildup can happen very quickly, and lead to costly repairs.

Why are my clothes taking longer to dry?

A clogged dryer vent will substantially reduce your dryers ability to dry your clothes in the time it was designed to. Most dryers should dry a load in 30 mins. If your's is taking longer the vent is most likely the culprit.

Why is my dryer warm to the touch?

If your dryer is warm to the touch, it means that the dryer is not able to "push" the hot air outside your house. Therefore it just recycles itself inside your dryer causing an excessive heat buildup. When the hot air cannot escape the vent system, it will stay inside the laundry room, thereby elevating the temperature and, of course, making your a/c work harder.

Why is there lint in my laundry room?

A clogged dryer vent means that there is a negative pressure in the system, and the exhaust air is not being pushed outside your house. Naturally the air will find any means of escape, usually right outside the dryer.

Why is there a smell in my laundry room?

If the moisture laden air cannot escape properly,  it will "lay" inside your dryer and vent. Sometimes it will result in a burning smell, and other times in that nasty mildew odor.

How often does my dryer vent need cleaning?

An "average" family of four should clean their dryer vent every two years. This is an average family in a typical scenario. Variables that will alter the typical scenario.
  • Pets - Pet hair will actually bind to lint particles making them much larger and increasing the buildup factor.
  • Pools - Families with pools dry more towels than an average family would. Towels produce a large amount of lint. have you ever noticed how a towel is thick and fluffy when purchased, but as it ages it becomes thinner? The "shedding" of towel fiber has a direct effect on lint buildup.
  • Length and routing of the dryer vent - In a perfect situation, the dryer vent will exit the house in a straight shot. Every turn it makes slows the air down, and creates an area where the lint is readily deposited. Also, the more vent pipe in use(2-3 story houses) the longer the distance your dryer has to work to remove the hot air and lint.
